Investment, innovation, and sustainable housing: OVIA at the center of the Portugal – Hong Kong dialogue

On July 3, OVIA was represented by its Secretary-General, Tiago Sousa Dias, at a Business Luncheon held at the Hotel Real Palácio in Lisbon. The event, which had a significant institutional and economic profile, was co-organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Office, with support from the Portugal-Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Industry – PHKCCI.

This meeting brought together decision-makers, business leaders, and institutional representatives from Portugal and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It served as a platform for economic diplomacy, highlighting concrete opportunities for cooperation within the Greater Bay Area, one of the most dynamic regions in Asia and globally.

During lunch, attendees had the chance to hear strategic speeches from:

  • Ms. Winnie Ho, Secretary for Housing of the Hong Kong SAR Government, who presented the latest public policies and plans for urbanization and sustainable housing in Hong Kong;
  • Ms. Maisie Chan, Commissioner for Development of the Greater Bay Area, who emphasized Hong Kong’s role as a gateway for Portuguese companies and talent entering the Chinese market.
  • Ms. Rosana Wong, Vice President of Yau Lee Holdings Limited, who shared best practices in linking construction, sustainability, and innovation;
  • Representatives from the China State Construction group, who showcased potential collaboration in modular construction technologies and innovative housing solutions.

OVIA’s participation in this event is part of its strategy to strengthen ties with the Southeast Asian economic ecosystem and promote Oeiras Valley as a European hub for innovation, urbanism, and sustainability.

In 2024, OVIA and PHKCCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding, marking the start of an active partnership between Oeiras and Hong Kong. OVIA’s attendance at this Business Luncheon reflects its commitment to fostering collaboration between Portuguese companies and the Greater Bay Area market, focusing particularly on housing, sustainable construction, urban technology, and talent mobility.

OVIA remains committed to deepening this strategic relationship and exploring opportunities for institutional, business, and academic cooperation between the municipality of Oeiras and key economic players in the Greater Bay Area.
