Housing with dignity: visit to Moyross reinforces commitment to inclusive urban models

Following the meeting between Oeiras City Council, Limerick City Council, and the OVIA delegation on April 3, the members of the Portuguese delegation visited the Moyross neighborhood, one of Limerick’s most emblematic social housing projects.

The visit focused on recognizing the urban and social revitalization carried out in Moyross, a community that has undergone a profound transformation in recent decades. Through continued investment in decent housing, social inclusion, qualified public spaces, and access to essential services, Moyross has become a national example of how integrated public policies can break cycles of exclusion and create opportunities for the most vulnerable populations.

During the visit, the representatives of Oeiras highlighted the relevance of the topic, also sharing the trajectory of the Portuguese municipality in the 1990s, when Oeiras eradicated shantytowns and run-down areas, creating qualified, sustainable housing projects centered on human dignity, which are currently a reference in Portugal.

Oeiras and Limerick recognize social housing not just as a housing response, but as a driver of social cohesion, urban equity, and collective progress. The visit to Moyross reinforced this alignment of values and highlighted the importance of continuing to invest in fairer, more inclusive cities with opportunities for all.

This sharing of experiences inspires future collaborations and reaffirms the will of both municipalities to build more humane, resilient, and socially balanced communities, where access to decent housing is a guaranteed reality for all.
