On July 22, the Macau Scientific and Cultural Center in Lisbon hosted the screening of the documentary “Heritople,” directed by António Salas Sanmarful. This film pays tribute to the cultural, historical, and human richness of the Historic Centre of Macau, marking two decades since its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Produced with the support of the International Institute of Macau (IIM), “Heritople” offers a sensitive and profound journey through Macau, a city at the crossroads of Eastern and Western traditions, uniquely intertwined. The documentary explores the living layers of urban memory, giving voice to the communities, practices, and expressions that contribute to Macau’s plural and shared identity.
This screening is part of the official celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Historic Centre of Macau’s inscription on the World Heritage List, highlighting IIM’s crucial role in enhancing, preserving, and disseminating Macau’s cultural legacy to Portuguese-speaking communities.
Since its inception, the Macau International Institute has served as an important link between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, promoting cultural, academic, and historical exchange while producing vital knowledge about Macau’s multicultural experience. Its activities include publishing works, organizing exhibitions, and supporting initiatives that strengthen ties between peoples, cultures, and generations.
In this context, recognizing the symbolic and strategic value of this work, OVIA supports this initiative and joins in the celebration. Recently, OVIA and IIM signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance institutional cooperation in the areas of culture, innovation, and economic diplomacy between Macau and Portugal.
