25th Anniversary of Macau’s Handover: OVIA strengthens ties between Portugal, China, and Macau

On December 19, 2024, the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre (CCCM) in Lisbon hosted a solemn ceremony commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Macau’s Handover to the People’s Republic of China. The event brought together prominent figures, including the Chairman of the Board of OVIA, Ambassador António Martins da Cruz, whose presence underscored OVIA’s pivotal role in strengthening ties between Portugal, China, and Macau.

The ceremony, organized by CCCM and the Jorge Álvares Foundation, featured a diverse program that included the inauguration of the Governors of Macau Gallery and the photographic exhibition “Macau: The Last Days of Portuguese Administration” by photographer Rui Ochoa.

Ambassador António Martins da Cruz, a distinguished figure in the diplomatic sphere, highlighted during his participation the importance of initiatives like this for reinforcing historical bonds and envisioning a future of enhanced cooperation. Since 2022, OVIA has been at the forefront of efforts to attract investments and create opportunities that not only benefit Oeiras and Portugal but also strengthen dialogue with Macau and China. Moreover, through its commitment to promoting economic and cultural diplomacy, OVIA has served as a strategic bridge in developing pathways for collaboration between the business and artistic communities of these regions.

The ceremony also featured speeches from notable experts such as Ambassador Pedro Catarino, who reflected on the historical significance of December 19, 1999, and the Vice-Rector of the University of Macau, Professor Rui Martins, who discussed the transformations Macau has undergone since that milestone. The presence of China’s Ambassador to Portugal, Mr. Zhao Bentang, further reinforced the spirit of partnership and international cooperation. More than a historical commemoration, this event stood as a testament to the collaborative efforts between public and private institutions to foster mutual understanding and pave new avenues for development. OVIA continues to play a crucial role in this dynamic, strengthening Portugal’s position as a strategic partner on the global stage.
