Ambassador António Martins da Cruz delivers keynote speech at the Macao Bluetech Ocean Forum – Maritime Green Liquid Fuels Session

OVIA participated on October 22 in the Macao Bluetech Ocean Forum – Maritime Green Liquid Fuels Session, an international event dedicated to the sustainable future of the maritime sector and the new dynamics of the blue economy, held at The Venetian Macao and co-organized by OVIA in partnership with Fórum Oceano, the International Forum for Clean Energy (IFCE), and the Macao Association of Convention, Exhibition & Tourism Sectors (MACETS).

The forum gathered representatives from Macau, China, Portugal, and Hong Kong, bringing together government officials, energy leaders, and academic experts to discuss the role of green liquid fuels as a cornerstone of the energy transition and maritime decarbonization.

Ambassador António Martins da Cruz, President of OVIA, delivered one of the keynote speeches titled “China–Portugal Strategic Cooperation in the Green Fuel Economy.” He emphasized the growing importance of China–Portugal cooperation in energy transition and Portugal’s leading role in Europe in advancing renewable energy and sustainable fuel production.

The Ambassador highlighted Portugal as a European benchmark in renewable energy adoption, citing major projects in green hydrogen and advanced biofuels led by GALP, PRIO, and other Portuguese companies, particularly in Sines.

He also recalled the 2017 Blue Partnership between the governments of Portugal and China, and the creation of the Sino-Portuguese Research Center for Maritime Innovation, as examples of bilateral cooperation driving innovation and sustainability in the blue economy.

Praising China’s recent pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035, Ambassador Martins da Cruz described it as “a powerful signal of global environmental leadership,” adding that “only through trust and cooperation can we build a truly sustainable green economy.”

The session concluded with the announcement of the International Green Fuel Alliance, a new platform for global collaboration in green fuel technologies and investment, which the Ambassador hailed as “a tangible example of shared commitment between Europe and China to build a greener, more sustainable future together.”

OVIA’s participation in the Macao Bluetech Ocean Forum reinforces Oeiras Valley’s international standing as a hub for innovation and sustainability, aligned with global strategies for decarbonization and green investment.
