From Oeiras to the Orient: economic diplomacy as a catalyst for global partnerships

On June 8, following OVIA’s mission to Hong Kong, Macau, and Hengqin, a lunch meeting took place with Ambrose So, the Honorary Consul of Portugal in Hong Kong. This meeting had an institutional and strategic purpose, aiming to reflect on the mission’s results and strengthen the shared vision of cooperation between Portugal, Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China.

During the lunch, participants discussed ways to deepen economic and institutional exchanges and explored strategies to enhance Portuguese exports to the Chinese market. The conversation particularly focused on sectors where Portugal has demonstrated growing international competitiveness, including energy, innovation, technology, and agri-food.

Representatives from asset management and energy companies based in Hong Kong also attended the meeting, seeking information about business opportunities in European and Portuguese-speaking markets, as well as ways to access the Oeiras Valley innovation ecosystem.

Ambrose So, a prominent figure in the Hong Kong business community with a long history of civic and diplomatic involvement, emphasized the strategic potential of Oeiras and Portugal as a gateway to the European market. He also highlighted Macau’s role as a vital link in the Sino-Portuguese relationship.

OVIA presented the next steps in its international action plan, reaffirming its commitment to attracting qualified investments, promoting bilateral trade, and fostering collaboration between companies, institutions, and regions.

This lunch symbolically concluded an intense and successful mission, solidifying Oeiras’ status as an international hub for innovation, business, and economic diplomacy, and establishing OVIA as a proactive partner in building sustainable connections between continents.
